Dentures are an excellent option for patients who are looking to replace their missing teeth. However, dentures near you require some delicate care and attention that natural teeth don’t need. One of the steps that dentures require is relining. This is a step that many individuals don’t know about and may not think of doing when their dentures begin to cause them discomfort. At Garden City Dental Centre, we offer denture relining so that our patients can get the most out of their dentures as possible.

What is a Denture Reline?

There are two kinds of relining, hard and soft. In both cases, relining dentures works by adding a layer of material inside the dentures so that they fit properly and comfortably in the mouth. After wearing dentures for a while, the denture itself will wear down. This can cause your dentures to start feeling uncomfortable in your mouth, and when this happens, a reline usually works to rectify the situation.

Depending on the amount of wear and tear your dentures have, you can opt for either a soft or hard reline. A soft relining can be done in the dental chair, and you can have your dentures back within one visit to Garden City Dental Centre. However, some types of relines must be completed at an off-site dental laboratory, and you will have to be without your dentures until they are repaired and sent back. If you choose a hard reline, it will be completed in a dental lab.

Hard vs. Soft Relines

A soft reline uses a porous, soft material that is typically very comfortable and can be completed by our dentist near you in one appointment. A soft reline is best for those new to dentures in Winnipeg or who have more sensitive gums. Hard relines use the same gum-colored, acrylic material that dentures are already made out of.

How Often Should Dentures Get Relined?

The answer to this depends on the type of reline that you choose. A soft denture reline lasts between one to two years, and a hard reline can last up to four years. Hard relines last longer than soft relines due to the different materials used. Hard relines use a more durable material than soft relines. A temporary reline can be done at our dental clinic in Winnipeg until a complete reline can be done. A temporary reline typically takes a few weeks.

Most of the time, dentures only last about five years due to the change of the mouth structure that occurs because of jawbone deterioration and aging. As these small changes occur, getting your dentures relined can help them last longer. However, once larger changes have occurred over a couple of years, it will be time to get a new pair of dentures. A denture reline should happen at most once every two years. However, if you notice any discomfort or your dentures just don’t fit correctly or are loose, getting a reline will help alleviate your discomfort.
